ENFIELD — Statement on Police Installation of Enfield Surveillance Cameras Without Regard to Town Protocol from Public Policy & Advocacy Director Chelsea-Infinity Gonzalez.
“The ACLU of Connecticut has long advocated for stronger government transparency and accountability. These traffic cameras do not prevent accidents or calm traffic, and they offer no strategic path to making cities safer or more modern. For these cameras to be installed without municipal oversight is completely unacceptable,” said Chelsea-Infinity Gonzalez, ACLU of Connecticut public policy and advocacy director.
“We have seen firsthand the harm that a lack of police oversight and accountability can cause. In 2023, an audit by the Connecticut Racial Profiling Prohibition Project revealed that hundreds of state police officers reported tens of thousands of fake traffic stops and failed to report thousands of real traffic stops — over-reporting stops of white drivers and under-reporting stops of Black, Latine, and other drivers of color. The installation of these surveillance cameras in Enfield is yet another stark reminder of the urgent need to invest in meaningful, transparent government oversight and accountability mechanisms."
