HARTFORD — Today, Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin announced that federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents may have worn misleading uniforms, labeled only “police,” in an attempt to lure an undocumented woman to the Hartford Public Safety building and detain her. The following is a reaction from Dan Barrett, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut:
“The ACLU of Connecticut is encouraged that local public officials, including the mayor and police chief, raised the alarm regarding ICE agents impersonating police officers in Hartford. ICE’s deceptive attempt to mislead an undocumented woman in Hartford exploits city policies that were intended to build community trust in local law enforcement. Such ruses could undermine public safety and deter city residents from accessing critical services. ICE agents should immediately stop impersonating police officers in Hartford and refrain from doing so in other Connecticut towns.”
