“Once again, Governor Lamont has shown he does not value the lives of the incarcerated people in our state, especially the disproportionate number of Black and Brown residents impacted by Connecticut's system of mass incarceration. Last year he did not proactively save or protect incarcerated people from COVID-19 and now he vetoed a bill seeking to limit the practice of solitary confinement,” said David McGuire, executive director of the ACLU of Connecticut. "The desperation people feel in solitary can lead to breakdowns, self-harm, and suicide. Despite serving no rehabilitative purpose, thousands of people a day in the United States are held in solitary confinement. Driven by the wants of their constituents, Connecticut's lawmakers passed a bill to end solitary and the governor took the law into his own hands by vetoing it. This is unacceptable."
